For the second weekend in a row, Disney and Pixar’s INSIDE OUT 2 juiced the box office by earning an estimated $100.0M. The weekend total for all films playing in North American theatres was $151.0M, compared with $109.1M on this same weekend last year when Jennifer Lawrence’s rom-com NO HARD FEELINGS led all films with $15M in its debut.
Demand to see INSIDE OUT 2 has created back-to-back box office wins in the last two weeks compared with those same weeks in 2023. The winning streak should continue next weekend with two new openings for the horror prequel A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE and the Western drama HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA – CHAPTER 1.
INSIDE OUT 2 followed up last weekend’s record-breaking opening with a spectacular hold, only down 35%. The 10-day total for the Pixar hit has risen to $355.2M domestic and $634.3M worldwide, making it the #1 domestic grossing movie of 2024, blowing past DUNE: PART TWO’s $282.1M.
INSIDE OUT 2’s $154.2M opening was the second best of all time for an animated film, only 15% lower than INCREDIBLES 2’s $182.7M first three days. Here is a list of the top-grossing animated films in Hollywood history.

After ten days in theatres, INSIDE OUT 2 has become the all-time top-grossing animated film at this point in its release, edging out INCREDIBLES 2 which had held the record until now. This has restored confidence in Disney’s ability to generate excitement for a big new Pixar release. The only question remaining is how well INSIDE OUT 2 will sustain interest after Universal and Illumination’s DESPICABLE ME 4 opens on Wednesday, July 3rd.
That film will draw from the same family audience that has seen INSIDE OUT 2. The DESPICABLE ME franchise has been a crowd pleaser, with DESPICABLE ME 2 ranking as the tenth highest-grossing animated film in history, having a total domestic box office of $368.1M. Despite the competition, we expect INSIDE OUT 2 to hold up well, based on the buzz factor that it has established over the last 10 days and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Finishing second is Sony’s BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE, which earned an additional $18.8M this weekend, a decline of 44% from last weekend. The success of this buddy cop sequel starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is an additional success story of the summer. After seventeen days, it has earned $146.9M in the U.S. and Canada and $257.7M worldwide. The current chapter of the franchise has nearly matched the success of its box office leader BAD BOYS: FOR LIFE, which had grossed $148.1M at this same point in its release.
BAD BOYS Franchise Leaders
- BAD BOYS FOR LIFE (1/15/2020) – Opening Domestic $62.5M, First 10 Days Domestic $120.7M, First 17 Days Domestic $148.1M, Total Domestic $206.3M
- BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE (6/7/2024) – Opening Domestic $56.5M, First 10 Days Domestic $113.0M, First 17 Days Domestic $146.9M, Total Domestic TBD
RIDE OR DIE has earned 99% of the amount FOR LIFE had generated at this same point, closing the gap steadily since its opening weekend. At this rate, it will overtake RIDE OR DIE to become the franchise leader, a feat that no one expected at its release.
Competition for the R-rated audience has heated up with this week’s opening of THE BIKERIDERS, next week’s A QUITE PLACE: DAY ONE, and next month’s DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE which will open on July 26th. RIDE OR DIE has surpassed the $250M in worldwide gross necessary to become profitable from ticket sales, with Sony spending $100M on its production. Based on this success, we expect there to be more BAD BOYS chapters in the years ahead.
THE BIKERIDERS from Focus Features finished in third place in its opening weekend with a gross of $10.0M. Set in the 1960’s, its plot follows the evolution over time of a midwestern motorcycle club, the Vandals. Seen through the lives of its members and their families, the club develops from a surrogate family for local outcasts into an organized crime syndicate, threatening the founders’ beliefs and way of life.
The movie’s all-star cast includes Austin Butler (ELVIS), Tom Hardy (DUNKIRK), Michael Shannon (BULLET TRAIN), and Jodie Comer (KILLING EVE). Critics have weighed in with an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences landing at 74%. With a production budget of $40M, the film will need to earn $100M worldwide to break even, and it now seems unlikely it will get there after a disappointing $10M opening. At this point, the best that it can hope for is to hold onto most of its screens for the next month, and then tap into a good portion of its income in the ancillary market.
Just as it did last weekend, Sony’s THE GARFIELD MOVIE finished in fourth place with an additional $3.6M and a drop of merely 24%. After 31 days, the animated sequel has grossed $85.1M domestically and $207.6M worldwide, surpassing the $203.2M worldwide earned in 2003 by the original GARFIELD THE MOVIE, which had been the franchise’s box office leader up to this point. THE GARFIELD MOVIE has been helped by strong international sales, in markets where the comic strip is widely recognized and enjoyed. GARFIELD’s international box office accounts for 59% of its worldwide total.
20TH Century’s THE KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES added $3.6M this weekend to finish in fifth place, a decline of 35% from last weekend. After 45 days, the APES sequel has amassed $164.4M domestic and $4382.3M worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing film in the long-running series, ahead of WAR OF PLANET OF THE APES ($146.8M) but trailing RISE OF PLANET OF THE APES ($176.8M). KINGDOM is now the second highest-grossing movie to open this summer, after INSIDE OUT 2.
