For the third consecutive weekend, INSIDE OUT 2 led all films with an additional $57.4M in new ticket sales, a drop of only 45% from last weekend. The overall box office rose to $152.7M, with additional support from new openers A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE and HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA – CHAPTER 1.
It was the third weekend in a row for the 2024 box office to come in higher than the same weekend in 2023. On this weekend last year, INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY led all films with a $60.4M opening and the overall total was $128.3M. This winning streak should continue next weekend based on a strong opening for DESPICIBLE ME 4.
INSIDE OUT 2 has grossed $469.3M in the U.S. and Canada and $957.8M worldwide in its first 17 days, already more than the $858.9M total that the first INSIDE OUT earned in its entire run in 2015. INSIDE OUT 2 has moved into fifth place for the domestic box office earnings among all animated films, passing SHREK 2 which earned $444.8M in 2004.
By mid-week, it will also move past the $477.4M FROZEN 2 rang up in 2019. If it continues as expected, INSIDE OUT 2 will eventually eclipse INCREDIBLES 2 as the top-grossing animated film of all time.
BATTLE FOR THE HIGHEST-GROSSING DOMESTIC ANIMATED FILM – ALL-TIME
- INCREDIBLES 2 (6/15/2018) – $182.7M after 3 days, $349.8M after 10 days, $440.6M after 17 days, $608.6M Total
- INSIDE OUT 2 (6/14/2024) – $154.2M after 3 days, $355.2M after 10 days, $469.3M after 17 days
After opening 16% lower than INCREDIBLES 2, INSIDE OUT 2 surged in its second weekend to take the lead and has remained there since then. It still has some work remaining to finish with more than INCREDIBLES 2’s $608.6M, especially since DESPICABLE ME 4 will introduce stiff competition for the family audience when it opens on Wednesday.
If INSIDE OUT 2 holds onto 50% of its audience every weekend for the next four frames, it may well pull off that feat. Looking past DESPICABLE ME 4, the next movie to vie for a similar audience will be HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON which opens on August 2nd.
INSIDE OUT 2 just passed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, only the tenth animated film in history to reach that mark. Note that FROZEN 2 is the top-grossing animated film of all time, with a worldwide total of $1.453B.
Paramount’s A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE finished in second place with an opening weekend of $53.0M. This is the third movie in the horror series created by actor and filmmaker John Krasinski. DAY ONE is a prequel to the original A QUIET PLACE from 2018. Krasinski picked Michael Sarnoski to direct the film, after appreciating his debut as a director in the indie film PIG in 2021.
That effort was loved by reviewers, with a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Krasinski took a back seat in the details of producing DAY ONE, choosing instead to focus his efforts over the past three years on making the original family movie IF, which opened in theatres last month.
DAY ONE’s storyline moves away from the Abbott family and small town featured in the first two films, focusing instead on the early stages of an invasion into New York City by the dangerous extraterrestrials with an acute sense of hearing. Lupita Nyong’o takes over the lead from Emily Blunt and is supported by performances from Joseph Quinn and Alex Wolff.
Djimon Hounsou also reprises his role from A QUIET PLACE PART II. Critics continue to show admiration for the horror franchise, giving this chapter an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences have been somewhat less favorable with a 73% rating. Here is a recap of the box office performance of the three films in the franchise.
BOX OFFICE PERFORMANCE OF A QUIET PLACE FRANCHISE
- A QUIET PLACE (4/6/2018) – Opening Domestic $50.2M, Total Domestic $188.0M, Total Worldwide $341.0M, Budget $17M, Rotten Tomatoes Critics/Audience 96%/83%
- A QUIET PLACE PART II (5/28/2020) – Opening Domestic $47.6M, Total Domestic $160.1M, Total Worldwide $297.4M, Budget $60M, Rotten Tomatoes Critics/Audience 91%/92%
- A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE (6/28/2024) – Opening Domestic $53.0M, Budget $53M, Rotten Tomatoes 84%/73%
The original took the industry by storm when it earned $50.2M in its opening weekend from April 6-8, 2018. That film finished up with $341.0M worldwide, which was an exceptionally profitable 20X multiple against its modest production budget of $17M. A QUIET PLACE PART II opened on May 28, 2020, and earned $297.4M worldwide, which was badly needed and much-appreciated by exhibitors at the height of disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic.
With this third film, Krasinski has taken a huge risk by shifting the plot away from the popular Abbott family to new characters and a different setting. Having a somewhat controlled production budget of $67M and a series-high opening of $53.0M, it should reach profitability from its theatrical run, needing only $168M to reach that milestone.
HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA – CHAPTER 1 took third place with an opening weekend total of $11.0M. This western is a passion project for celebrity Kevin Costner, who wrote, directed, and stars in the movie. Costner began his work on the concept in 1988, believing that most Americans did not fully understand or appreciate the experience of American settlers in the Western territories during the period before, during, and after the Civil War.
The cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, and Danny Huston. The story centers on a group of fictional characters and their twelve-year journey to establish settlements in the American West. Unfortunately, the movie has been poorly received by critics, giving it an underwhelming 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers have been somewhat more positive with a 71% audience rating.
When Costner first took his idea to Disney in 1988, the parties did not agree on an appropriate production budget, and the project was shelved. Costner’s vision for the project has only expanded since that time, now comprised of a series of four feature films. Costner invested as much as $38M to complete production on CHAPTER ONE and CHAPTER TWO.
CHAPTER ONE has had an overall production budget of $100M, producing a movie that runs for 3 hours and 1 minute. To deliver brutal authenticity, the film also carries an “R” rating. CHAPTER TWO will open in a mere six weeks, instead of following a more typical strategy for sequels to hold back the follow-on release for a year or more.
CHAPTER TWO’s production budget was a more modest $50M, benefiting from cost savings due to filming the two movies simultaneously. The two films together will need to earn a worldwide box office of approximately $375M to be profitable.
Production on CHAPTER THREE began last year but was halted by the writer’s and actors’ strikes. It resumed again last month but without the producers announcing a targeted release date. Considering this weekend’s disappointing numbers, the viability of CHAPTER THREE and FOUR must come into question.
If anyone can pull off this ambitious project it would be Costner, who has been involved in some of the most successful and well-known Westerns of the past few decades. In 1990, Costner directed and starred in DANCES WITH WOLVES which won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director.
The rollout of that film began slowly, beginning in only 14 theatres but later expanding to become a huge success with $206.3M in the U.S. and Canada and $424.2M worldwide. Costner has re-introduced himself to new audiences in the highly successful, modern-day western series Yellowstone on Paramount+. Ironically after six years and five seasons, Costner announced recently that he will bow out from his leading role in the series due to his ongoing commitments to the HORIZON project.
BAD BOYS RIDE OR DIE took fourth place with $10.3M and dropped 45%. After 24 days, the action cop buddy film has taken in $165.3M domestic which is 99% of the domestic total that BAD BOYS FOR LIFE had at that same point.
LEADERS OF THE BAD BOYS FILM FRANCHISE
- BAD BOYS FOR LIFE (1/17/2020) – $62.5M after 3 days, $120.7M after 10 days, $148.1M after 17 days, $166.3M after 24 days, $206.3M Total
- BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE (6/7/2024) – $56.5M after 3 days, $113.0M after 10 days, $146.9M after 17 days, $165.3M after 24 days
KALKI 2898 AD finished in fifth place by earning $5.4M at the box office in its opening weekend. The picture opened on Thursday, June 27th bringing its four-day total in the U.S. and Canada to $11.0M. The Indian Telugu language film features a science fiction story that is intended to be the first of many planned installments, a Kalki Cinematic Universe inspired by Hindu mythology.
It is set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2892 AD, following a select group of characters on a mission to save Kalki, the unborn child of SUM-80, a lab subject. An ensemble cast led by Indian superstar Prabhas brings the film to life, with an investment of $72M in its production which makes it the most expensive Indian film ever made.
By comparison, the Indian film RRR in its opening weekend in the domestic market earned $9.5M and wound up with $15.2M. Given its appeal to South Asian audiences, its worldwide total was a much more robust $166.6M.
Where Are We as of 6/27
After 25 weeks, the 2024 year-to-date box office stands at 78% compared to those same weeks in 2023 and 63% of the total at this time in 2019.
