The new diversity-sensitive HFPA’s Golden Globe noms look suspiciously like those that could have come from the old no-diversity HFPA.
The best picture noms for Drama & for Musical or Comedy and for Director show virtually no diversity. And there’s only one drama nom with a female-centric storyline — TÁR, the musical bio-drama starring Cate Blanchett (a Globes actress-drama nominee).
The HFPA’s other drama noms don’t reflect diversity: AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, ELVIS, THE FABELMANS & TOP GUN: MAVERICK.
Among the films with diversity that aren’t up for best picture: are BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER, TILL (with no best actress-drama nod for Danielle Deadwyler despite her Oscar buzz) & THE WOMAN KING.
As for Musical or Comedy noms, only one nominee has some diversity — the action-adventure comedy EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, starring Michelle Yeoh (a Globes actress-Musical or Comedy nominee).
The other Musical or Comedy noms lack diversity: BABYLON, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN, GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY & TRIANGLE OF SADNESS.
The HFPA’s directing noms are not big on diversity: James Cameron (AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER), Baz Luhrmann (ELVIS), Martin McDonagh (THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN), Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE) & Steven Spielberg (THE FABELMANS).
Among the missing female directors: are Chinonye Chukwu (TILL), Sarah Polley (WOMEN TALKING), Gina Prince-Bythewood (THE WOMAN KING) & Maria Schrader (SHE SAID).
