Ever since a disappointing Memorial Day Weekend to begin the summer, movie ticket sales have been on the upswing, brightening the outlook for exhibitors for the remainder of 2024 and the next two years.
All the major releases this summer have outperformed expectations, beginning on June 4th with BAD BOYS: RIDE OR DIE and continuing with INSIDE OUT 2 (6/14), DESPICABLE ME 4 (7/3), LONGLEGS (7/12), TWISTERS (7/19), DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (7/26), IT ENDS WITH US (8/9) and ALIEN: ROMULUS (8/16).
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, summed up the last three months by saying, “One of the most remarkable summer seasons on record is in the home stretch and much can be learned from the emotional box office ups and downs…This has arguably been a more interesting, challenging, and revelatory summer than last year irrespective of where the numbers land on Labor Day.”
Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, added, “It reinforces that when you deliver quality films, audiences enjoy going to theaters. As we look at our slate going forward, we’re encouraged by the momentum we have and hope it continues for the entire industry.”
