Last week, ViacomCBS issued a press release to announce that its Paramount+ streaming service enjoyed its most successful week ever earlier this month, with over 1M new sign-ups. Since March when Paramount+ was launched, the media giant has provided only infrequent updates on its status.
The company reported that at the end of Q3 it had a total of 47M subscribers for all its streaming services, which also include Showtime, BET+, and Noggin. Because it chose not to report stand-alone numbers for Paramount+, many concluded that this was to avoid comparisons with its larger streaming competitors such as Netflix, Disney+, HBOMax, Amazon Prime Video, and even Apple TV+.
Paramount+’s very good week was linked to the day & date release of its animated feature CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG as well as the success of MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN, the original crime drama which has become the most-watched series on the platform to date. ViacomCBS has signaled an increased focus on Paramount+ by elevating Nickelodeon chief Brian Robbins in September to become the new CEO of Paramount Pictures.
