While industry insiders have been pouring over the 2025 release calendar for months, the general public is just beginning to pay attention to the movies in store for the new year. The British online newspaper The Independent renews its annual tradition to ask its entertainment experts to list out what they consider to be the most interesting new movies in the next 12 months. Their methodology is purley subjective, “based on nothing but vibes – plot descriptions that sound particularly intriguing, stars and filmmakers with solid track records, [and] the presence of [famous British TV celebrity] Richard Osman.” However, if you add together enough subjective lists, once can begin get a sense for the movies with buzz potential.
In the relatively near term, Bong Joon Ho’s MICKEY 17 (3/7), BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY (2/14) starring Renée Zellweger and Ryan Coogler’s SINNERS (4/18) made the list. Beyond that, you can’t look away from Tom Cruise in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – THE FINAL RECKONING (5/23), Danny Boyle’s 28 YEARS LATER (6/20) sequel, the superhero duo SUPERMAN (7/11) from James Gunn’s DC Studios and THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS (7/25) from Marvel. People are starting to talk about Pamela Anderson’s stellar comeback comic performance in THE NAKED GUN (8/1), while they’ve already been talking for years about the next chapter in James Cameron’s AVATAR universe AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH (12/19).
