Tilman Singer is a German-born filmmaker who has made short films and feature films, mainly leaning toward the horror genre. Singer produced stop motion animation short films and commercials in Germany, France, and the U.S. before he began filmmaking studies at the Cologne-based audio-visual media institution, Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2011, where he made two shorts, The Events at Mr. Yamamoto’s Alpine Residence (2014) and El fin del mundo (2016), and then his graduate thesis film (which began as a short and expanded to feature length), Luz (2018), which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and was released by Yellow Veil Pictures.

Singer was director-writer of the German/U.S. co-production, Cuckoo (2024), starring Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas, and Jessica Henwick, premiering at the Berlin Film Festival and released by Neon.

Personal Details

Tilman Singer was born and raised by his parents in Leipzig, in the State of Saxony in the former German Democratic Republic and now the Federal Republic of Germany. Singer attended the art college and research institution for audio-visual media, Academy of Media Arts Cologne. Singer is married to a woman born in Colombia; the couple lives in Berlin.

Favorite Horror: Tilman Singer has noted that his favorite horror movie is John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982).

Inspiration: Singer adapted some of his wife’s experiences in Colombia for his screenplay for his debut horror feature, Luz.
