Although much of her career has been devoted to the stage, Maryann Plunkett has appeared in a group of mainly American independent films. Her first feature was in Lodge Kerrigan’s acclaimed indie film, Claire Dolan, with Vincent D’Onofrio and Katrin Cartlidge. Plunkett was part of the ensemble of Noah Baumbach’s comedy-drama, The Squid and the Whale (2005), with Laura Linney, Jeff Daniels, and Jesse Eisenberg.
In 2010, Plunkett appeared in two features: John (ER) Wells’ The Company of Men, with the starry cast of Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, and Maria Bello; and Derek Cianfrance’s daring Blue Valentine, with Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling. Plunkett joined the cast of Jonah Hill, James Franco, and Felicity Jones for the mystery, True Story (2015), and then appeared in Jason Bateman’s The Family Fang (2015), with Bateman, Nicole Kidman, and Christopher Walken.
Plunkett appeared in 2019 in two important American works: first, as the wife of Fred Rogers in Marielle Heller’s critically praised, award-nominated A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019), with Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys; and then as Mrs. Kirke in Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed version of Little Women, with Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, and Laura Dern. The great American filmmaker Kelly Reichardt cast Plunkett in the ensemble of her Showing Up (2022), with Michelle Williams, Hong Chau, John Magaro, André 3000, Judd Hirsch, and Amanda Plummer.

Born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, Maryann Plunkett attended and graduated from the University of New Hampshire. Maryann Plunkett has been married to actor Jay O. Sanders since 1991; the couple has one son, Jamie.

Theater Artist: Maryann Plunkett has a distinguished theater career, including leads in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, Tony-winning performance in Me and My Girl, Richard Nelson’s Apple Family plays cycle, a 1991 Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible with Martin Sheen, John Pielmeier’s drama, Agnes of God, and several productions by the National Actors Theatre, including Chekhov’s The Seagull and George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan.
