Heidi Lee Douglas

Director / Editor / Producer

One value unites Heidi Lee Douglas’ work: Creating powerful, engaging stories that explore social and environmental justice issues in unexpected ways to find new audiences and move the dial.

Heidi’s directorial feature debut, SUKA, a Romeo and Juliet-style crime thriller, was nominated for the AACTA award for Best Original Score and won a Silver Australian Cinematography Society Award for Best Feature under $3 million. Suka was being broadcast by Channel 9 (9Go!) in December 2023 and was released by Umbrella Films on Amazon Prime.

Heidi’s professional background includes twenty years of documentary filmmaking focusing on environmental and human rights issues. Her autobiographical documentary DEFENDANT 5, about her experience defending Tasmania’s forests, was commissioned by Al Jazeera and ABC, broadcast internationally and awarded widely across film festivals.

Heidi’s drama debut was the elevated genre short LITTLE LAMB – a feminist re-telling of the Bluebeard fable set in convict Van Diemen’s Land – which premiered at Fantastic Fest and screened for four years in global film festivals. Little Lamb was invited to be part of Etheria Films Festiva’ls women in genre feature anthology 7 FROM ETHERIA, released theatrically throughout the USA in July 2017 and available on Amazon.

Heidi’s sophomore short, DEVIL WOMAN, an eco-feminist horror, premiered at Fantasia and was selected for Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), Frightfest, and Morbido.

Heidi is attached to direct a modern re-telling of Charlotte Perkins Gilmore’s seminal gothic short story The Yellow Wallpaper, due for production in 2025.
