Andy Muschietti

Producer / Writer / Director

Birthdate – August 26, 1973 (51 Years Old)

Birthplace – Buenos Aires, Federal District, Argentina

Andy Muschietti (birthname: Andrés Muschietti) has proven to be one of the most successful South American-born filmmakers in recent decades to make the transition to Hollywood. Perhaps not since composer Lalo Schifrin an Argentine artist realized Muschietti’s level of success—though his career trajectory began humbly with jobs as a storyboard artist and assistant director during the 1990s.

Muschietti made a pair of short films, including the 2008 Mama, which he then adapted (in English) for his debut feature (under the same title) as writer-director in a Canadian-based production in 2013, co-starring Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and grossing a potent $148 million globally for distributor Universal Pictures.

This striking commercial success set up Andy Muschietti for a major assignment—as director of Warner Bros.’ ambitious, two-part big-screen adaptation (by screenwriters Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga, and Gary Dauberman) of Stephen King’s epic horror novel, It (2017), with Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, and a young cast including Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, and Jack Dylan Grazer.

Part one of It grossed a stunning $702 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million. Muschietti continued as director of It Chapter Two (2019), starring an adult cast led by Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, and Skarsgård, and earning a strong $473 million globally.

Andy Muschietti continued working with Warner Bros. for the much-discussed, much-delayed production of the DC Extended Universe movie, The Flash (2023), starring Ezra Miller, Sasha Calle, Michael Keaton, Michael Shannon, Ron Livingston, Maribel Verdu, Kiersey Clemons, and Jeremy Irons, and which received poor reviews and reportedly lost $200 million for Warners. underperforming box office.

Andy Muschietti departed from his usual director’s chair as a producer on directors Anthony and Joe Russo’s action-adventure, The Electric State (date to be announced), starring Chris Pratt, Brian Cox, Millie Bobby Brown, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Jenny Slate, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton, and Jason Alexander. Muschietti’s next directing assignment with Warners was the Batman-Robin adventure, The Brave and the Bold (date to be announced).
