Hunter Schafer gained fame as one of the first trans actors to portray a trans character in film and television with her role in the highly acclaimed HBO series, Euphoria (2019-present), and had her first screen role as a voice actor on the English dub of writer-director Mamoru Hosoda’s acclaimed sci-fi fantasy animated movie, Belle (2021), with fellow voice actors Kylie McNeill, Paul Castro Jr., Jessica DiCicco, Manny Jacinto, and Chace Crawford.

Schafer had her live-action feature debut in the sequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), with Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, and Viola Davis under Francis Lawrence’s direction, and which was released by Lionsgate Films to a solid $337.4 million global gross.

Schafer was cast by filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos for his anthology black comedy, Kinds of Kindness (2024), starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, and Hong Chau, which was released by Searchlight Pictures. Schafer had her first feature film starring role in director-writer Tilman Singer’s horror-thriller, Cuckoo (2024), with Dan Stevens, Marton Csokas, Jan Bluthardt, and Jessica Henwick, and released by Neon.

Hunter Schafer co-starred with Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel, FKA twigs, and Kaia Gerber in director/writer/producer David Lowery’s U.S./German-backed drama, Mother Mary (date to be announced), released A24. Schafer then starred in director-writer Zach Strauss’ horror-thriller, Palette (date to be announced), with Noomi Rapace and Frankie Shaw, and executive produced by Schafer.

Personal Details

Hunter Schafer was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and was raised in Trenton, Arizona, and Raleigh, North Carolina, by parents Katy and Mac Schafer (Presbyterian minister). Schafer has two younger sisters and one younger brother. Schafer attended Needham B. Broughton High School, where as a junior in 2016 she protested in opposition to North Carolina’s Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, and was added as a plaintiff in the lawsuit contesting the state’s bill.

Schafer then transferred to the North Carolina School of the Arts, completing the school’s High School Visual Arts program before graduating in 2017. As Schafer concentrated on her acting and modeling careers in 2018, she put her plans on hold to attend the London arts college, Central Saint Martins. Schafer identifies as a trans woman and prefers female pronouns; she was diagnosed with dysphoria in the ninth grade, and has said that “I am proud to be a trans person.” Schafer’s height is 5’ 10”. Schafer’s estimated net worth is $4 million.
