Fede Álvarez (birthname: Federico Álvarez) is a Uruguayan-born filmmaker who has mainly specialized in remakes of renowned horror movies, beginning with a string of short films including Los Pocillos (2001), El Ultimo Alevare (2003), El Cojonudo (2005), and his breakthrough with Panic Attack/Ataque de pánico (2009), which was discovered on YouTube and led to deals with Hollywood studios.

Álvarez was director/co-writer of the remake of the original 1981 Sam Raimi movie, Evil Dead (2013), with Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, and Lou Taylor Pucci, which premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival before a Sony Pictures Releasing release which yielded a $97 million gross (against $17 million costs).
