Carl is an award winning filmmaker, photographer, musician and designer with an international profile. He is a producer/ writer and director, and has produced and directed over 30 documentaries for broadcast television, including a RTS nomination. He has also directed award winning short films.He directed the Bill Nighy feature film, Sometimes Always Never (2018) that premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and has received critical acclaim and in the UK, Australia and the USA picking up rave reviews in the LA Times, Washington Post and the New Yorker. In 2020 he directed the award winning short film More Than Time (2020).Carl produced and co-wrote the BBC/Warp/Pathe feature film Grow Your Own (2007) starring Olivia Colman. His short, A Day in the Life – Twenty Four Zero Hours (2017), written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, was commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company as one of thirteen re imaginings of a track from the seminal Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The film was approved by The Beatles and housed on their website and twitter account, the first time The Beatles have sanctioned a 3rd party project.A Winter’s Tale: Shakespeare Lives (2016), a short film also written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, was commissioned by the British Council. as part of Shakespeare Lives 2016; an unprecedented global program celebrating William Shakespeare’s work and his influence on culture, education and society on the 400th anniversary of the bard’s death.Unloveable (1998), a short fictional film about a fan of The Smiths, was exhibited at the Manchester Art Gallery for two years.As a photographer his Polaroids for the Frank Cottrell Boyce novella, The Unforgotten Coat, won Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis, the largest children’s literature prize in Europe as well as the Guardian Children’s Literature Prize. He has an exhibition opening late 2022.As a musician, he has recorded and toured as a member of Liverpool pop band The Farm, having numerous hit singles/albums (including number 1’s in Britain, Europe and the USA) and designing their artwork.
