Joshua John Miller (birthname: Joshua John Miller) is a published author, as well as screenwriter, actor, and director, for which he debuted as helmer and writer of The Mao Game (1999), based on his novel, and co-starring Piper Laurie and Kirstie Alley. Miller had previously appeared in Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), marking his child acting debut, and a small role in director Tim Hunter’s landmark drama, River’s Edge (1986), with Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye Leitch, Roxana Zal, and Dennis Hopper.

Miller then appeared as a younger actor in various supporting roles, including co-writer/director Kathryn Bigelow’s neo-Western horror movie, Near Dark (1987), with Adrian Pasdar, Jenny Wright, Lance Henriksen, and Bill Paxton, as well as roles in Chuck Workman’s Stoogemania (1986), with Sid Caesar; Teen Witch (1989); Meet the Hollowheads (1989); filmmaker Mark Lester’s sci-fi Class of 1999 (1990); Death Warrant (1990); and And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird (1991), earning Miller a Saturn Award nomination for best younger actor. Miller returned to the big screen in director-producer Jeremy Kasten’s splatter-horror remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis’s 1970 The Wizard of Gore (2007), co-starring Kip Pardue, Bijou Phillips, Crispin Glover, and Brad Dourif.

Joshua John Miller was co-writer (with creative and life partner M.A. Fortin), as well as executive producer, of the slasher comedy, The Final Girls (2015), with Taissa Farmiga, Malin Akerman, Adam DeVine, Thomas Middleditch, Alia Shawcat, Alexander Ludwig, and Nina Dobrev, and which premiered at the South by Southwest film festival before a Stage 6 Films release. Miller was co-writer (again with Fortin) and director of The Exorcism (2024), starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Simpkins, Sam Worthington, David Hyde Pierce, Samantha Mathis, Adrian Pasdar, and Adam Goldberg, and which was released wide by Vertical.

Personal Details

Joshua John Miller was born and raised in Los Angeles by parents Jason Miller (Pulitzer-winning playwright and actor) and the late Susan Bernard (Playboy pin-up model). Miller’s parents divorced in 1983. Joshua Miller’s half-brother is actor Jason Patric, and his maternal grandfather is famed photographer Bruno Bernard, aka “Bernard of Hollywood.”

Miller attended and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. Miller then attended university at Yale, Antioch University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, where he majored in creative writing and graduated in 1997. Miller did the famed MFA program at the University of Iowa, earned the Capote Fellowship, and was selected for the Houghton-Mifflin Fellowship Award.
