Dua Lipa is a multi-Grammy-winning, British-Albanian recording artist and songwriter, known for her disco-inflected pop music, which has led to her appearance in feature films. Lipa’s acting debut arrived when filmmaker Greta Gerwig cast her as Mermaid Barbie in the blockbuster comedy-fantasy, Barbie (2023), starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell, garnering eight Oscar nominations (including best picture) and grossing over $1.45 billion for Warner Bros.
Lipa also wrote and recorded the song, “Dance the Night,” for the film’s soundtrack. Lipa landed a supporting role in her first non-singing part in the spy comedy, Argylle (2024), directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn and starring Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson, and which was released by Universal Pictures.

Dua Lipa was born and raised in London, England, by mother Anesa Lipa and Dukagjin Lipa, both raised Muslim from Pristina, Yugoslavia (and now Kosovo), and both of Kosovo Albanian descent. Lipa has one sister, Rina, and one brother, Gjin. Lipa’s grandfathers were both historians. Lipa’s father is a former rock musician who encouraged her to start singing at age five. Lipa’s early schooling was at Fitzjohn’s Primary School, which included cello studies, and then singing lessons at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London. Lipa’s family relocated to Kosovo after the country declared independence in 2008, with Lipa attending Mileniumi I Tretë School.
Lipa returned to London, working as a waitress to support herself and completing her high school studies at Parliament Hill School while finishing her singing training at Sylvia Young. Lipa made her singing downloads, which led to modeling gigs, TV ads, and an eventual signing deal with the Warner Bros. label. Lipa’s many philanthropic projects include co-creating with her father the Sunny Hill Foundation to support financially strapped Kosovo citizens. Lipa was named an honorary ambassador of Kosovo by Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani in 2022.
In reaction to Lipa’s support for a ceasefire in the Israeli invasion of Gaza in the wake of Hamas’ October 7 massacre in Israel, the Israeli music group Ness & Still released a single that called for Lipa’s death. Lipa has been in a relationship with model Anwar Hadid, the younger brother of supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid. Lipa has also been in a relationship with French director Romain Gavras, son of French filmmaker Costa-Gavras, since 2023. Lipa’s height is 5’ 8”. Lipa’s estimated net worth is $35 million.

Early Rejection: Dua Lipa was told as a girl by her school choir director that she could not sing.
Nickname: After having her name mispronounced by talk show host Wendy Williams as “Dula Peep,” Lipa’s fans adopted it as an affectionate nickname which the singer soon embraced.
