Gerard Johnstone (birthname: Gerard Johnstone) is a New Zealand-based writer-director who specializes in blending horror with comedy. After creating the sitcom, The Jaquie Brown Diaries, in 2008 with New Zealand TV presenter and actor Jaquie Brown, Johnstone made his writing-directing feature debut with the critically-acclaimed Housebound (2014), about a woman sentenced to house arrest in a haunted house, starring Morgana O’Reilly, and premiering at the South by Southwest film festival.

After directing and writing episodes of the Terry and the Gunrunners (1985) reboot, Terry Teo, in 2016 and serving as executive producer and director for the series, The New Legends of Monkey, Gerard Johnstone landed his second feature directing assignment with the Universal/Blumhouse Productions horror movie, M3GAN (2023), the first bonafide box office hit of 2023, starring Allison Williams and with a global box office projected at over $200 million on a $12 million budget.
